So now Apple are rejecting iPhone apps that link to the Dropbox "create account" page:

Reason for rejection is the fact that if the user does not have Dropbox application installed then the linking authorization is done through Safari (as per latest SDK).

Once the user is in Safari it is possible for the user to click "Desktop version" and navigate to a place on Dropbox site where it is possible to purchase additional space.

Apple views this as "sending user to an additional purchase" which is against rules.

Devin Chalmers has a similar story:

Through five rounds of rejection and revision, over eight weeks, we and our appeals team kept bowdlerizing our signup links and verbiage to no avail: every week the big red dot would descend again on our iTunes Connect icon

Eventually it became clear that, from the reviewers' perspective, there was a problem with that, at all: it wasn't the (already redacted) signup links that we were being rejected for, but any GitHub link. At all.

In the specific case of Dropbox, they have an SDK that will let you sign into an existing account. According to MacStories:

[..] the Dropbox team has already released a “beta” version of the 1.2.2 SDK, which removes the option to create an account on Dropbox.com. The beta SDK was seeded a few hours ago, and there’s the possibility Apple will reverse its decision on those rejections once they see the removal of the incriminated links.

So, if I'm trying to write a client app against a third party API, I have exactly one option - put a username/password login form for that service directly into my app - not exactly good security practice - and offer the user no help at all in creating accounts on this service.

If I'm integrating against, say, the Flickr API, which doesn't offer this ability, I'm stuffed. No more third party Flickr clients on the App Store, I guess. Or I could write to Yahoo! and ask them to provide a login flow that doesn't provide any links that lets my users escape and get to a page that'll let Yahoo! ask for money. Good luck with that.

As someone who wants to write apps against third party APIs, I now limited to writing clients against:

free services that have no intention of ever charging money (i.e., services that are going to go out of business)
or paid services that are willing to not try to up-sell their customers during account creation and won't ever change this policy (i.e., services that are going to go out of business)

And if I have a web service with an API and would like people to write against it, my options are limited to one of

Don't charge money, or provide the option to charge money, and never plan to charge money
Don't provide any easy way for users who are new to the service and are coming from a third-party client to give me money
Don't have an ecosystem

Firefox is now at version 12.0. Basic AppleScript support (such as getting the URL of the current window) hasn’t worked since version 3.5, and it was intermittently broken in some earlier versions.

Realistically, Shelf is going to stop being useful at some point in the next couple of years.

The Apple App Store doesn't permit the sort of AppleScript usage that it relies on, so it's never going to be an App Store app.
As a result (and also as part of a longer-term trend, really), no-one really cares about AppleScript any more. Not that Firefox was ever an exemplary citizen in this respect.
Google are killing the social graph API that provided most of the discovery for it.
Increasingly few of the services that I'm interested in provide RSS feeds to their data, preferring to be iPhone apps or walled gardens.

At SXSW there was a lot of Instagramming going on. I wanted to see what sort of pictures people were taking, but there didn't seem to be an easy way of doing it and I was too busy eating to fix it myself at the time. But now,

Behold: LOCALGRAM ¹.

Localgram asks your browser where you are, then shows you recent nearby uploads. That's it. It'll look decent on the desktop, and decent on an iPhone. It might work on other things. Internally, this is a single Instagram API call, with maps and pictures on it. It's so ridiculously simple that it barely seemed worth building, which is why I built it.

Playing with this around London, I've come to two conclusions.

Other people's Instagram photos are really boring. Good grief. Without the filters of the phone app, it's just an undifferentiated stream of graffiti, food, and duck face.
It's surprising to me that so many photos are geotagged. Photos at a foursquare venue have maps on the photo page, but it seems that even photos without a first-class venue can have a location associated with them and visible through the API. The default web photo page doesn't display the location at all. I hadn't realised that photos retained their location. I wonder how many other people don't know this.. Of course, this might be because some of the locations on these photos are clearly complete rubbish..

I'm playing with Instagram² a lot recently. I like the live nature of the photo stream. I like their API (I like OAuth2). I don't like their lack of feeds and app-only approach, but I can fix the first one of those myself.

I'm also playing with the lovely Toner maps tiles from Stamen, because I was looking for a gratuitous excuse to do something with them. I'm using modestmaps.py (thanks to some prodding from Aaron) to render out the static maps - hopefully this won't kill anything - I'm not really set up to be a maptile server here. We'll see.

More Flickr vs Instagram

As a follow up from an earlier piece:

The Google Trends lines for Flickr and Instagram have finally crossed. I think it's a pity. There are tools around Flickr that I'd like to build that I'm probably not going to, because I don't have any faith in it still being around in a year's time.

This attitude doesn't make any sense, because I pay Flickr money, and Instagram still don't seem to have any sort of sensible business model. How badly can Yahoo! have messed up here that I'm preferring Instagram right now?

I agree - phones are computers now. But we're still right to be annoyed over this, in the same way we were right to be annoyed over PathGate. Apps on my phone have the ability to go behind my back and take my (and other people's) personal data. Of course they can. It's a computer. They can do all sorts of things, and there are perfectly good and safe reasons to do all of them. This power can be used for evil! And it's not possible to tell in advance if a given application is going to do something evil.

But we're still right to be annoyed, because preventing this sort of thing was pretty much the entire premise of the app store review process. (That, and stopping iPhones bringing down the entire West Cost phone network, of course.) Apple promised to protect us from evil applications, and used this as justification for all sorts of stupid rejections that in no way made my iPhone experience safer.

I'm prepared to accept the trade off of a review process that sometimes stops good things if it'll also stop bad things. But it's not stopping the bad things. And it's not possible to stop the bad things. It probably stops a lot of them. But that's not the trade-off I was promised.

Pinterest is requiring sites to individually and explicitly opt-in to "this image is not available for public sharing". In fact, the way they are providing for you to do this isn't even something that individual photo owners could have done on their own - it had to be implemented at a Flickr-wide level, rather than by photo owners. This bothers me.

As the article points out, Flickr already had a "do not share this photo" setting on their site. Pinterest should have respected it. When the next social image sharing site turns up, do they get to invent their own "do not steal" meta tag that everyone has to implement as well?

This is the heart of the issue. Consumers don’t, can’t, and shouldn’t have to know the people and motives behind purchases in apps — all consumers should need to do is trust that Apple has done their job vetting all of this.

Apple failed to do that with Path and other apps that uploaded user contacts, but I have yet to see a scenario where in-app purchases turned out to be a scam. Apple vets the in-app purchases closely because they know that consumers trust them to do just that — and because Apple must spend the time and resources to vet these goods, Apple feels they are entitled to their cut.

I think Apple is entitled to their cut too — just so long as they continue to do an excellent job vetting the apps.

But they're not doing an excellent job. They're claiming to do a job that isn't possible, then sticking inappropriate band-aids over problems retroactively if there's enough press outrage.

There was no possible way for Apple to prevent "Pathgate" short of entirely preventing apps from getting at the phone's address book data. The consumer trust in Apple is.. not misplaced - the App Store is a safer and nicer place than the Android store / Google Play / whatever it's called - but it's not fully justified. There hasn't been a major in-app purchase scam yet.

There has been a lot of traction in general about the entire NoSQL movement. You’ll hear a lot about Cassandra, MapReduce (MapR), and MongoDB when it comes to this realm. At work I’ve been tasked and have had the pleasure of playing with MongoDB. Today, I spent most of the time playing with it, mainly tried to get it up and running.

I was having trouble at the beginning trying to get everything. It was mainly due to some server configuration ignorance on my end but now it’s up and running. The server I have it on is our dev server. Currently, the server is running a Centos 6, PHP and now Mongo locally. Mind you, this is purely for development purposes.

I’d like to share some information for those of you starting MongoDB to help save you some time. Read this blog post to get yourself up and running. Make a /data/db directory and the command below gets Mongo daemon running:

An Indian man claimed that his hand was chopped off after he failed to repay the loan he has taken. 22 year old Ram Sagar, who is from a backward caste in India, said that he owed 300 Rupees to a powerful man from his village which is about 70km from Patna. Unfortunately those with long-standing chronic pancreatitis are at higher risk for pancreatic cancer than the general population. It is also to be pointed out that CA 19-9 blood levels can also be elevated because of pancreatitis so just because your levels are elevated it doesn't necessarily mean you have pancreatic cancer. Just thought I'd throw that in so ya'll don't run to the doc asking him/her to test your CA 19-9 levels however ...

If you have had long-term chronic pancreatitis it may not be a bad idea to chat with your doc about the possibility of cancer and the benefits of checking CA 19-9.

How to Do Your Taxes on the Cheap

Tax season is upon us and accountants are flooded with receipts. If you do your own taxes you are probably collecting all of your documents and W-2s so you can file soon. I recently read an article on Forbes about how to file your taxes on the cheap and it mentions the various computer-based programs that are available to you.

If your parents are still claiming you then you probably won’t be filing and claiming deductions, but it would still be good for you to start learning how to prepare your tax returns for once you do start to claim yourself.

As an investor, you will need several statements when you begin to file your taxes. Your brokerage should give you a form that will summarize your buys and sells for that year. If you traded stocks in an IRA then you won’t get your final forms until after April since you have until April of the current year to contribute to your IRA for the present year.

If you began a business this year or worked as a 1099 employee then you will definitely need the help of a professional tax preparer to make sure that you get all of the deductions you are entitled to. I like to use TurboTax.com, it pulls in all of my information from the previous year and guides me step by step through all of the deductions and credits I am entitled to. Even if you only worked at a pizza delivery boy, you may be able to deduct the cost of maintaining your car. 2011 tax credits and tax credits for each subsequent year is updated in the newest version of TurboTax.

For next tax year, begin saving all of your receipts and writing down your mileage and where you were going. You would be surprised at how many deductions apply to small businesses and 1099 independent contractors. See Pub 1799 for Independent Contractor and Pub 334 for Tax Guide for Small Business. If you decide to do your taxes on your own you should visit IRS.gov and research the forms you will need. They will mail you any IRS publications you will need free of charge.

Celiac Disease is strongly associated with pancreatitis and autoimmune pancreatitis. The thing about autoimmune pancreatitis is that it is often misdiagnosed as pancreatic cancer due to raised levels of the same antibody, IgG4. And it can also look very similar on CT scans.

What I am getting at in a round-about-way is that your diagnosis of idiopathic pancreatitis main in fact actually be autoimmune pancreatitis or at the very least pancreatitis associated with an autoimmune disease such as Celiac Disease, Sjogren's Syndrome, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitus, Lupus, etc ... whether diagnosed or not.

Simply put, a stop-loss order is an order placed with your broker to sell your position once the asset drops to a certain price.

Well if trading without a stop-loss is like jumping out of a plane with no parachute, then trading without a profit-limit is like taking a hot air balloon up for the rest of your life. You may not think there’s such a bad thing about unlimited profit but if you don’t have a target goal price then you are really just jumping in and hoping the price goes up.

When you first evaluate your trade and decide to buy in the first place, you should have an “I’m wrong” and “I’m right” prices in mind. The “I’m wrong” price is your stop-loss. It is when you can say o.k. market stop twisting my arm! I’ll get out!

Your “I’m right” price is your goal price. It’s what you were hoping to see the price go to based on your initial evaluation.

Feel free to change these orders as you see fit. You may reevaluate and find out that your stop-loss is too tight or your profit-limit is too loose or vice-versa. That will have an effect on your overall stock returns and portfolio profitability.

You also will need to reevaluate an place these stop and limit orders every time they are canceled if you are trading stocks with certain brokers. You may have to selected Good Til Canceled and the time frame varies with brokers. Some will allow your order to stay in for anywhere from 30-90 days. In the futures and forex market, your stop and limit orders will stay with the trade you placed, once again depending on the broker.

It is a fairly complicated, indepth article however; if you still drink alcohol this article may help you to understand why you need to quit drinking alcohol and of course more importantly why it is necessary in order to create an atmosphere conducive to pancreatic tissue regeneration after damage due to pancreatitis.

How I turned $1760 into 50 dollars

Most people only highlight their investing accomplishments. But I’m going to talk about one of my failures and how you can avoid the same mistakes. I made the mistake in the foreign exchange market but this mistake could apply to practically every market because it involves trading psychology.

One thousand, seven hundred and sixty dollars was what I deposited into my first forex trading account. Most forex traders blow their first account and I was no different. By the time I had finished ‘trading’ I was down to $50 dollars. But if you listen carefully and take notes you might not make the same mistakes I did.

When I first learned about the foreign exchange market I was very excited, to say the least. At the time, with about $37 dollars you could control $10,000 dollars worth of currency. I had been introduced to leverage before with options and futures but most of the options and futures brokers require a higher amount of margin on deposit to get started trading.

Being a college student, I didn’t really have large amounts of cash to start investing, so I decided to get into forex to grow my capital and get rich fast.

Mistake 1: Focusing only on what I would make and not what I would lose

My first mistake was getting into forex with the idea that I would make tons of money and not lose any. All of my projections and profit targets never took into consideration any losing trades.

I planned budgets and future trades based on winning every single trade I made. I ignored the statistics that most day traders lose money and that most first time forex traders blow their first account. I was going to be different.

And it worked…for the first few days.

Mistake 2: Not Controlling My Emotions: Greed, Fear and Revenge

My first few trades were all profitable. My account went from 1760 to 2100 dollars in 3 days! Then I got cocky. I thought I couldn’t lose.

The next morning I made 81 dollars before I even got dressed for the day. I visited a friend and traded a few times before I got to his house. I placed a really big trade with my can’t lose attitude and lost 300 dollars in one morning. That was all the gains I had made to date. I was pissed, so I tried to get revenge on the market and I lost another 300 dollars.

Mistake 3: Not Following My Rules

I lost the first 600 dollars because I didn’t control my emotions and because of those emotions, I threw my rules out the window. A good trader is like a scientist. She formulates a strategy, back tests that strategy against history, forward tests that strategy with a paper trading account and then puts that strategy to work in a live account. If at any point the strategy doesn’t work, she fixes what was wrong in any of those steps and starts again. I had an airtight strategy that I had tested using each of these steps. But trading in a live account with large amounts of leverage can cause any new trader to forget every good habit they learned; especially when one loss wipes out all of your gains.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Risk to Reward Ratio

It took me about 3 trades to make the first 300 dollars. It only took 1 trade to lose all 300 dollars. That was because I did not pay attention to my risk to reward ratio. I would place a trade with a 100 pip limit and a 300 pip stop. (A pip is the name for the smallest movement in a currency price. For my leverage 100 pips was 100 dollars.) If I paid attention in my statistics class I would have never set up my trades this way.

If I assume that 50% of the time the market will go up and 50% of the time the market will go down, I should also assume that I have a 50-50 chance of being right. With this probability, in order to grow my portfolio, I would have to make more money when I win and risk less money when I lose. I didn’t do that.

After losing a few more trades to fear and greed and statistics, I was down to only 50 dollars. I withdrew the last of my money, whipped by the market. But really I was whipped by my own mind.

Reformed Forex Gambler

I’m very proud to say that I have since learned my lesson. It cost me $1760 dollars to learn it but I am a very disciplined trader now. I follow my rules on every trade. I give every trade at least a 2 to 1 reward to risk ratio. I don’t let my emotions control me. And I’ve been profitable ever ~~on every trade~~ since! State run Tianjin Post from China reported that a woman in China has given birth to a 7.04kg baby. The 29 year old mother from Henan province in central China gave birth to the baby boy on Saturday. The 7.04kg baby is believed to the heaviest newborn baby ever recorded in China since the country’s founding in 1949. However, the heaviest baby being born ever recorded was born by a woman from Ohio back in 1879. The baby weighed 10.77kg.

What Is ERCP?

If you have had an acute pancreatitis episode your attending physician maybe suggesting or telling you to have an ERCP. What exactly is ERCP?

ERCP = Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography and it is used for diagnosing and supposedly relieving problems of the digestive tract.

This is a short post because information regarding what ERCP is, how it's used and what you can expect have already been covered here.

In 1979 I had an early form of ERCP but it wasn't called ERCP. My doctor simply called it endoscopy. I came through it without a hitch but depending upon the experience of your physcian who actually does the ERCP you may or may not wish you had never agreed to it because ...

6% - 10% of patients experience serious complications and one of those complications is acute pancreatitis. That is as high as 1 in 10 who undergo the proceedure realize it was a mistake. Of course that also means that 90 - 94% realize no problems due to ERCP.

Personally, knowing what I now know, I'd have to be at deaths door before I allowed the procedure but that's me. And then I'd want to know how many of the proceedures my physician doing the ERCP has actually done, how many he or she does each month and how many of his/her patients experienced complications. I'd want to know the physician knew what he or she was doing and had had plenty of sleep, didn't have a fight with his/her spouse or some other major distraction that may cause him or her to screw up during my proceedure. An average of 1 in 10 having serious complications from ERCP is a tad high as far as I'm concerned. But ...

DO NOT let my thinking influence your decision as to whether or not you have an ERCP. You are you and I am me, we need to do what we feel is best for us at the time. Just do your research and go in with your eyes wide open and realize that ERCP carries a fairly high risk of complications.

New Research Suggests That Pancreatitis ...

May be linked to the substantial release of intracellular calcium (Ca2+) from internal stores. That doesn't mean that calcium supplements are the enemy. It means that if you have some weird happenings within your cells (maybe due to an autoimmune disease) that the release of intracellular calcium may play a big role in acute pancreatitis.

You'll also see more evidence that caffeine is a protector which means that those who are concerned about drinking coffe or tea and having the caffeine cause problems will find that research does in fact suggest that tea and coffee should be beneficial, not an enemy. Dad puts shit on Daughter’s Lips

A man from China puts faeces or more commonly known as shit on his ten year old daughter’s lips for being disobedient. It is reported that the man in his thirties scraped faeces from a public toilet bowl and then smeared it on his daughter’s face. The incident occurred at a market in Hangzhou, China.

The dad repeated the incident five times, each time going into the toilet and then repeating the act. However, upon being informed of the incident, the local police had reprimanded the man. The man has since owned up to his actions. The man performed the act because his daughter refused to obey to his instructions thus angering the man.

Pharmaceutical Saleswomen Offer Sex for Sales

It is reported in Singapore, saleswomen from multi-national pharmaceutical companies are wiling to offer sex with doctors in return for sales orders to meet their sales target. The saleswomen are willing to sleep with the doctors if they agree to purchase the pills and products from them in order to boost their sales within the very competitive business. The saleswomen do not hesitate to offer their bodies as failing to meet the sales target set by their companies can result in them losing their jobs. According to insider information from pharmaceutical saleswomen known as Cheryl, 30 years old, she stated that, a high number of the young and pretty saleswomen are willing to sell their bodies to the doctors in return for sales orders. She added that, there was even a saleswoman being caught having sex with a doctor in his clinic last year. Besides that, we can see that more saleswomen are wearing revealing cloths to attract the attention of their clients to help sealing the deals.

First Rental Property: Find Investors or Go It Alone?

While putting together any successful venture is time-consuming and hard work, it is much easier put the pieces together once you know where to start. A good place to start is deciding on whether or not you want to take on investors.

Advantages of Investors

I know the first thing that comes to mind is “I can have investors? Who’d want to invest in my rental property?” and I’ll answer those questions in a bit. Regardless of whether you’ll find any investors, anyone can look for them. It’s best to first decide if you want to initiate a search. There are some good reasons to do so.

One of the biggest advantages to finding investment money is that you can reduce your risk of potential loss. Let’s say that you need $40,000 to initiate your first mortgage on a multi-family home. If your venture fails completely, you are out at least $40,000. What if investors fronted $30,000 and you put in $10,000? Your risk has reduced considerably. An influx of investment cash can also accelerate your property accumulation if you plan on scaling up a large operation.

Another important advantage is that taking on investors will allow you to draw a regular salary in addition to equity income. For example, on your own, you’ve been able to acquire three units. Your profits are your rent revenues minus your expenses. However with investors, you’ve purchased 12 units. As the company manager, you are entitled to draw a salary, usually a percentage of revenues. After you subtract your salary and other expenses from rent revenue, you receive a share of the residual profits in proportion to the size of your own investment.

If your investors have business or rental property experience, you can get free help. Investors don’t always want a passive income stream. Investors can be a great source for advice and guidance. Since they have an interest in the success of your company, they have an incentive to assist you.

Disadvantages of Investors

The advantages of taking on investors are convincing, but there are some drawbacks.

You run things, but you aren’t the boss. Regardless of how many investors buy into your company, you will always have to be attentive your investor’s questions and concerns. If you own less than 50% of your company, then your investors have the ability to fire you as company manager.

Each investor purchases a right to profits and a say in how the company is run. A good team works together to make sound business decisions and leaves you to handle the day-to-day operations. A poor team bickers with each other and treats you like a subordinate. You need to pick your investors well.

Finding Investors

If you’ve decided to look for investors, you need to know how to find them.

Owning rental property is a great investment. You are purchasing real estate, so your investment appreciates in value and is relatively safe. Everyone needs housing, ensuring that you won’t fall short with demand. It’s an investment that sells itself and finding investors is easier than you’d think.

There are plenty of people who want to be involved in rental property investments, but there are concerns that prevent them from doing so. They lack the time to manage a business, the knowledge to maintain properties or the funding to go it alone. Offering to be the business manager resolves these drawbacks, but you have to sell your business and your expertise.

One great way to break the ice with anyone you think could be a potential investor is to have a business plan. A business plan is like a giant research paper that explains who, where, what, when and how your rental property will operate and succeed in making a good return for investors. It takes a lot of time and effort to put one together, but once completed, you have all the details of how you plan to earn money spelled out in black and white.

Don’t just talk to family and friends about rental property. Pull from the business plan and talk about how your venture’s projected returns beat the stock market, and the investment buy- in can be a small as a single mortgage payment. Having details lets everyone know that you’ve thought out more than just what business you want to try. You’ve charted a roadmap to success.

CCU is a member of the Veterans Yellow Ribbon Program, so the VA will match each additional dollar CCU contributes, up to 50% of the difference between the student’s tuition and fee benefit and the total cost of tuition and fees. Here is a brief explanation of the eligibility and benefits for adult and graduate students for the Yellow Ribbon Program:

At CCU, an unlimited number of students will be eligible for Yellow Ribbon Program benefits for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Students in CCU’s College of Adult and Graduate Studies will receive up to $2,500 per year in CCU benefits, beyond the base VA fund, which will be matched dollar for dollar by the VA, for a total of $5,000 per year. The benefit is used to cover any tuition and fees incurred.
The combined amount that CCU and the VA contribute toward student expenses may not exceed the student’s full cost of tuition and fees.
The benefit is renewable each year the student maintains satisfactory academic progress, conduct and attendance.

CCU’s College of Adult and Graduate Studies offers reduced undergraduate tuition for active duty military and their dependents, and we are thrilled to announced that effective January 2012, the special tuition rate will be extended to members of the Reserve and National Guard and their adult dependents. Man Dies after Swallowing False Teeth during Sex

A 74 year old man was reported to be found dead after swallowing his dentures or false teeth after having sex with a 62 year old prostitute in Taiwan. Then man had separated from his wife many years ago and had been living with a close female friend in the New Taipei City. However, after having a 30 minutes sex session with the prostitute, the man suddenly collapse while putting on his clothes. The man fell back onto the bed and not moving. The prostitute tried to wake the man. After having a couple of failed attempts, she proceeded to contact the local rescue team. The man was then rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctors. The doctors found that his dentures or false teeth was stuck in his throat and is believed to be the cause for his death.

There is no denying that a high credit score is important for purchasing a home, renting an apartment and even being hired by certain employers. When you have poor or no credit, it is important to know how to improve your credit score.

Improving your credit score hinges on 5 key components as outlined below.

Determining your credit worthiness is, in part, decided on by how long you’ve been holding credit. The longer you have successfully been using varying types of credit, the better a consumer you will be, thus making your credit score higher.

If you have an older account that you are not using, keep it open. This will continue to help your credit history thus improving your credit score.

Payment History

Nothing affects your credit score more than your payment history. If you have maintained on-time payments over a course many years, your credit score is going to reflect that. The best way to improve a lower than desired credit score is to make on-time payments each and every month without fail.

Credit Limit to Balance Ratio

The ratio of how much credit you are provided to how much you actually owe is another large component of a credit score. Lenders are looking to make sure that you have not over extended yourself. Aiming for a 20% debt ratio or lower is best. That is to say that you should hold no more than 20% of your credit potential in debt. If you are extended $10,000 in credit, you would want to make sure that your total debt is less than $2,000.

Types of Credit

Credit lenders are also looking at the types of credit you are holding. A mixture of store credit cards, major credit cards and loans shows that you are capable of managing the different payment types and credit limits that comes with them. Credit cards typically have small minimum payments and a lender who is looking to extend a loan with a larger payment will want to feel confident that you can handle a regular payment that may be significantly higher.

Frequency of New Credit Received

Credit lenders are also looking at how often you are applying for and receiving new credit. A large number of new credit cards could indicate that you are having troubles with your financial situation. It could also indicate a potential for over extending credit. Conversely, lenders are looking to see if there are frequent inquiries into your credit as well. This could indicate financial problems as well.

The exact amount that each of these components affects your credit score is unknown but diligence with each one will ensure you a high credit score as well as maintain a healthy financial situation.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits

If you are a member of the military or are a veteran interested in pursing a degree program at Colorado Christian University, there are various types of tuition assistance available to you that you may not know about. The Post-9/11 GI Bill, considered to be the most comprehensive education benefits package since the GI Bill was signed into law in 1944, is an education benefits program available to veterans who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2011. CCU is thrilled to offer our country’s veterans financial assistance, so they can pursue the degree program they have always dreamed about.

Here is the list of eligibility and benefits for adult and graduate students. To learn more about this, you can visit the Department of Veterans Affairs web site.

Post-9/11 veterans (served since September 11, 2001) are eligible.
Students who are eligible for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill must relinquish the Montgomery GI Bill benefits to receive Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
For full benefits, veterans must have served on active duty for an aggregate of 36 months; if less than 36 months, benefits will be pro-rated.
CCU’s certifying official will not determine a student’s eligibility. The veteran student should contact the VA and their education officer to determine eligibility.
Veterans’ benefits may be transferable to their dependents.
Effective August 1, 2011, the Post-9/11 GI Bill will pay tuition and fees up to $17,500 per academic year at Colorado Christian University.
The book stipend equals $41.67 per credit hour up to $1,000 per academic year, and is paid directly to the student.
The Monthly Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is determined by the zip code of the university where the student is enrolled, and is issued directly to the student on a monthly basis. Beginning October 1, 2011, housing allowance will be payable to students (other than those on active duty) enrolled solely in distance learning. The housing allowance payable will be equal to one-half the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents.
Tuition and fee payments made on behalf of the student will be issued to the school, not to the student.

I Have a Job

Check Your W-2

The first thing you will want to make sure you do this year is to check your W-2 and when you do your taxes see if you are paying too much during the year. I know it’s nice to get a lump sum back at tax time but you could be using that money during the year in each paycheck to pay down debt or save. If you get to much back this year, consider filing a new w-4 with your employer.

Check Your Health Coverage

Secondly, you will need to check your health coverage and make sure you are covered for injuries and what the deductible is if you need to use the insurance plan. We had some reps from our insurance provider stop by this past week at work and it really got me thinking about what the benefits are and if something were to happen to me, where would my finances be.

I Don’t Have a Job

Refresh Your Resume

If you are looking to get a job, you should make sure your resume is up to date and that you are filling in any gaps with volunteer work or part time gigs in your field. Check out the post I wrote on writing a job getting resume for more details on how to make it happen.

Check Your Auto Insurance Policy

You can shop around for a better insurance policy if you are paying too much for the one you currently have. Especially if you are driving a short distance each day. I will save 25% on my insurance just from enrolling in a driving monitoring program. It makes sense to check your insurer and see if there are any perks available before you decide to switch.

Open a New Savings Account

If you already have a steady savings plan then make it a point to squeeze and extra 2 to 5% into it. If you haven’t started saving 10% of every dollar you make then that should be your first goal. Put that into an FDIC insured savings account and if you can save more than 10% consider investing the rest.

Cut Down on Credit

If you are still struggling with credit, make sure to set up a plan to pay off your cards. Work on the smallest balance first or the highest APR first, whatever will give you that mental push to keep going. I am more motivated by a zero balance on each card so I work on paying of the smaller balances first and snowball them into the larger balances.

VA-GI Bill Benefits at CCU

Colorado Christian University is approved for Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits provided by the Montgomery GI Bill and Post 9/11 GI Bill, so all certificate programs, bachelor’s degree and master’s degree programs in the College of Adult and Graduate Studies are approved for payment of GI Bill benefits. If you are applying for admission to CCU or are already approved for GI Bill eligibility, you may seek benefits assistance by contacting a VA Certifying Official at the Service Central Office at CCU.

There are some requirements that must be satisfied before using GI Bill benefits. You must first complete the Veterans Affairs application for education benefits, a form referred to as VA Form 22-1990. You can get this form from the Department of Veterans Affairs web site or you can complete it online at the Veterans ONline APPlication (VONAPP) web site. If you apply directly online, your form will most likely be processed more quickly. It typically takes Veterans Affairs 8-10 weeks to process a new application; however, classes can be submitted for benefits during the processing period.

Here are the requirements for receiving VA-GI Bill Benefits for Education:

Students who are applying for benefits while on active duty must have VA FORM 22-1990 signed by their Education Officer.
Students who are applying for benefits and are not on active duty must also submit their DD-214 (Member 4 copy).
Students who are in the Reserves will be issued a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) FORM DD-2384.
Students who are eligible for benefits as a dependent of a disabled veteran (Chapter 35) must submit application FORM 22-5490.
Students who are eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation benefits (Chapter 31) will need to contact their VA Case Manager to obtain authorization FORM 28-1905. The toll free phone number to begin the application process for Vocational Rehabilitation benefits is 1-800-827-1000.

If you have used your benefits at another school, notice must be sent to Veterans Affairs to report the “Change of Program” and to establish Colorado Christian University as your parent school. If you have completed the necessary forms already, the next step requires that you submit your classes to initiate your claim for benefits, a process referred to as “enrollment certification.”

Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer and Aspirin

Those of us who suffer with pancreatitis, especially those with chronic pancreatitis, also enjoy an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas aka pancreatic cancer. One of the reasons I use aspirin to relieve pain and inflammation is that it seems to be safer than other NSAIDs because it doesn't cause heart attacks. However ...

There may be another good reason for those of you still in pain to use aspirin to rlieve the pain by reducing the inflammation within the pancreas. According to a new study aspirin may reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer. I am not going to go into the whole thing because you can read about it in several different places online. CCU Extends Military Tuition Assistance Program in 2012

Yesterday’s Company Websites Are Rapidly Becoming Obsolete

The company website, as we have known it for the past decade or more, is dead. Stick a fork in it – it’s done.

Okay, I’m being a little dramatic; that’s a little bit overstated, but not by much. Today the web is social, and that changes everything.

People have learned to expect much more from the web than the typical company website offers. It’s not enough anymore to have a collection of nicely formatted pages that tell people who you are as a business and what you do. People expect more. They want to know more about the people at your company and what they are about. They want to know what your customers think of your service. They want the ability to engage you (and your maybe even other customers) in a conversation before they decide to buy.

In short, many of the the old marketing metaphors (a megaphone comes to mind) no longer apply. The paradigm has been inverted. Push is pull; up is largely down; and companies no longer lead the marketing waltz. Instead, they follow the customer’s lead. As a result, company websites without social web functionality are rapidly becoming obsolete.

Consider most of the business websites you see. Most are largely static electronic brochures, not that different from their glossy paper cousins of the 1990s or the garish yellow pages ads that they replaced.

There are a number of obvious flaws with these websites:

There’s no shared knowledge between users
No relationship development
No open dialogues
No crowd sourced innovation
No viral marketing mechanisms
No community building (and therefore no possibility for customer advocacy)

The Next Generation Company Website is a Social Website.

In a social company website, customers have a voice and customers can interact with other customers. Yes, this is scary. It’s also a huge opportunity. Imagine having real-time access to customer feedback on new services or pricing. Imagine a direct window into how your customers feel about your competitors, about their biggest concerns and fears, or the things they admire the most about you and your company. Imagine having your customers advocating for you, effectively selling your products and services for you! All of these insights and possibilities are part of the experience on a social company website.

The next generation of company websites will be powered by social web interactions, allowing companies to create customized branded digital communities – online spaces where their employees, customers and prospects can share ideas and information, collaborate, solve problems and even have some fun.

These sites will be called Social Websites and and they will serve as the hub of a company’s social media presence, woven directly into the fabric of the social web, mobile-accessible and tightly integrated with Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, etc. but controlled and branded to the business.

Take a look at your website and ask some simple questions:

Are people able to engage with us (our staff) in a social way on our own branded company website?
Can they “friend” our employees? Can they “follow” what they say and what they share?
Can they “comment” on our products and/or services?
Can they observe other people have conversations with our staff on the website?
Can they subscribe to those conversations in order to “follow” the dialogue? Can they jump in if they want?
Can they easily move back and forth between the public social networks to our company website?
Can they easily share content across both?
Can we identify users on our website? Do we know them by their social network identities?
Can we then socially interact with our customers and prospects both on our website and on LinkedIn and Facebook?

If you are answering yes to most of these, you are doing very well. If not, don’t worry, you will be soon.

The next generation of company website technology has arrived. Don’t wait for the competition to seize your market space on the social web. You can get there first.

Woman dips hands in boiling water to prove purity

A 35 year old woman is forced to dip her hands into hot boiling water to prove her purity in a shocking incident at a village in India by the Elders of Madulapalem village in the Kamepally district of Andhra Pradesh state. The married woman was asked to perform the act following allegations by her husband that she had been unfaithful in their marriage. 37 year old, Ramaiah, the husband had sought to divorce his wife initially but upon counseling with the village council and elders, they insist that the woman has to dip her hands into the boiling water to prove her innocence in the purity test. It is said that this is a very common ritual in their caste and is not the first time. Sayamma’s hands are found badly blistered after the incident. She said that she had to take the test to prove her purity. The couple had been married for seven years.

Two Indian farmers were held at New Delhi, central of India for allegedly killing and sacrificing a seven year old girl in a sacrifice ritual. The girl was cut opened and her liver was removed in the ritual to ensure a better harvest for the poor farmers. The girl was confirmed to be Lalita Tati who was initially reported to be disappeared back in October. Her body remains was then uncovered a week later according to the senior police office in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state.

Police then managed to arrest the two Indian farmers following a successful investigation. It is then revealed that the little girl was killed to appease their gods for a better harvest in the coming months. Tati was kidnapped when she was on her way home from her neighbours house after watching television. After further investigation, the two farmers finally admitted to the crime and confessed that they have cut the girl open and removed her liver during their ritual to appease their gods.

Woman stays in toilet for 932 days

A woman from Singapore stayed at the toilet of her home for duration of 932 days. According to the woman, she felt that ‘someone’ was holding her down and preventing her from leaving the toilet during the period. The ‘someone’ seems to be the occurrence of paranormal activities felt by her. However, the woman ages 58 is believed to be suffering from depression and are mentally ill. According to her husband, with the help of the local police and ambulance, the woman was finally able to be transferred to the Institute of Mental Health for treatment.

The woman had not left the toilet since May 25 in 2009 and had spent her live within the toilet for 932 days. She ate, slept and drank within the toilet everyday. Her husband further stated that, she refused to leave the toilet and ‘someone’ threw stones at her. However her mental state and condition had improved since receiving the medication treatment. The woman no longer insisted on staying in the toilet after returning home.

While visual appeal is an obvious reason for updating your website, the benefits are more widespread. For example, Google has recently announced a “freshness update” to its omnipotent search engine algorithm that rewards websites for fresher content with higher search engine rankings. Also, integrating your website with certain social media tools can vastly increase your website traffic and brand awareness.

Dates and Links

Update or remove old references on your homepage. In particular watch out for old dates, outdated events, and broken links that no longer point to their original source. Another commonly overlooked example is the copyright date usually displayed at the bottom of websites. Whenever I find a rectangular box on a website informing me I’m the 11,658^th visitor, I look outside my window to make sure I didn’t accidentally step through a crack in time on my way to the office and get transported back to 1999. What’s worse than the tacky, completely inaccurate counter is knowing that behind the scenes of this website there is a hamster wheel powering the analytics where there should be a modern day V8. Good website analytics have become so crucial to the modern business I can’t imagine trying to use a website without them. In fact, most of the major business decisions we make are based on data collected from our website analytics. Even free tools such as Google Analytics can provide comprehensive insights such as how and where people are finding your company online, what marketing methods results in actual sales, and the list goes on. While I admit there is a small learning curve to using these tools, many of them are free to use and the investment in time/money to learn how is always worth it.

Overly Flashy/Unrecognizable Content

As much as I appreciate a good episode of “Wheel of Fortune”, flash and mystery have little place on a modern website. Today’s consumers want information clearly laid out and easily accessible online. If customers have to scroll down and/or click through multiple pages to find what they are looking for, they will drop like flies. My pet peeve for industries breaking this rule is restaurants. As much as I appreciate the decadent slideshows of featured cuisines and pages regarding unique philosophies for seeking out only the best ingredients, I do not want to feel like I’m looking at a Where’s Waldo book while simply trying to find the menu. As a business owner, you need to identify what your customers want most from your website, and give it to them in as simple a format as possible while retaining a professional appearance.

Many recent studies have found that while pay-per-click advertising can still be effective at driving website traffic, SEO is the leading vehicle of choice for growing online traffic as consumers become more adept at discerning ads from natural search engine results. Many older website designs lack SEO rich features that search engines like Google look for today. The first step of SEO is to include local and specific keyword phrases into you web pages. If your website is heavily designed with images instead of text, search engines are likely skipping over important content. A good way to determine what is being read by search engines is to click and drag your mouse to highlight all the text on a web page. If the text is part of an image (bad), the entire image will be highlighted or you won’t be able to highlight the text at all. In typical format, I have saved the best for last. One of the fasting growing trends in social media regards how customers interact with businesses via online reviews on social websites. Gone are the days when customers patronize a company because of a glossy brochure or fast talking salesman. Customers today have especially grown a distrust of testimonial web pages (for good reason) in favor of social review sites like Yelp, Insiderpages, Google Places, and so forth. This has led to an explosion in online review website usage which is not always advantageous to business owners. As consumers turn to outside sources to evaluate businesses, owners can be crippled by negative reviews (true or not), constantly needing to monitor the plethora of review websites, and long drawn-out processes for addressing harmful content. Rather than accept this as fact, there is another option. Several companies now offer very inexpensive online review tools that allow business owners complete control over 3rd-party, verified reviews.

For example, our tool, SurveyLocal, lets businesses automatically invite customers to review them, while directing positive reviews to social websites and negative reviews to be addressed offline (over the phone or in person). Pancreatitis Diet: Learn to Love Fish

Once you have completed your initial food diary consisting of vegan foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, rice and so forth) and have been on the diet and supplements (vit C, grape seed extract and curcumin) for 6 months and no longer have symptoms of pancreatitis (hopefully this is your outcome) then you can begin to consider beginning to upgrade your diet with the necessary protein for sustaining weight and muscle mass. Foods such as white fleshed fish (pollock, halibut, red snapper, bass etc...), chicken and turky.

Fish is much preferred over poultry simply because it offers tons of protein and a huge assortment of beneficial nutrients. For example: 1/2 of a fillet - 159 grams - of halibut will provide over 40 grams of protein, 1064 mgs of omega 3 fatty acids, 916 mgs of potassium, assorted B vitamins including the necessary B-12 (36%) that enables you to build good blood. It will also supply over 100% of your dailt selenium, 10% of your calcium and 43% of your magnesium.

Sardines, mackeral, salmon, trout (fresh wild or wild canned is best) will do even better in the the omega 3 fatty acid department but are oily fish and may cause problems so it is best to use caution and start with small amounts. Pollock, halibut and red snapper (white meat fish) tend to work better in regards to the pancreas.

Poaching or baking your fish or frying without oil is of course the way to cook your fish. If you are quite well (no abdominal tenderness or symptoms) you may be able to use a small amount of safflower oil in frying your fish. How to do this is to dump a small amount of oil into the pan and wipe the pan with a paper towel, this coats the pan but sucks up excess oil. However, you may want to simply use a good quality non-stick pan instead because it is safer for we who have pancreatitis.

Combine your fish with a nice baked potato and some fresh asparagus and you have one, fine, healthy low fat meal (about 5 grams of fat most of which is good fat). Pollock offers ZERO saturated fat, halibut 1 gram of saturated fat, snapper has about 1 gram of sat fat, fresh water bass has about 1 gram of sat fat per fillet (62 grams).

Compare fish to chicken and it's a no brainer. Fish actually offers LESS FAT and MORE NUTRITION. 64 grams of ready to cook chicken offers only 16 grams of protein VS 40+ for fish, no omega 3 fatty acids and only about 2% of your requirement of B-12. Chicken/turkey doesn't offer the other nutrients in the sizable proportions that fish does either. But ...

Chicken and turkey do offer a change of fair and you can use both chicken and turkey to create chili, meat loaf, burgers etc ... so there is a benefit derived from chicken and turkey. But ...

Fish is KING.
